Cloud Collectors opens at Articulate project space on Friday 3 February 2012, with work by artists Juliet Fowler Smith, Jason O'Brien, Nola Farman, Noelene Lucas and Peter Charuk. The exhibition is open 11am - 5pm each Friday to Sunday until 25 February.

The artists have each had a long fascination for the diffuse, changeable and ephemeral nature of clouds. Despite being water, clouds are not called water because they are so unlike it. They manifest in their own vastly different forms that change according to circumstances and conditions. Because of the mystery of being both changeable in form and constant in material, they are readily available as a metaphor for the nature of existence and the perceived relativity of time. Yet they are also very commonplace, the unseen background to everyday life, but one that has recently taken on a new significance with the heightened awareness of climate change and environmental conditions.

The artists use a variety of media to explore their interests in this diverse subject: Peter Charuk's photo and video installation, Jason O'Brien's scattered circular photographs and related floor elements and Noelene Lucas' multiple LED screens for video works will be anchored in the space with sculptural works by Juliet Fowler Smith and Nola Farman.

I have, up to date, been interested in mapping the relationship between the image

and text in the form of fragments where the images are read and the words form

pathways in relation to an ongoing theme, which is the search for ‘home’. At this

point ‘home’ for me resides not in a physical location but in the voice of others and

in their texts which offer an ongoing conversation. Using the myth of Ariadne’s

thread I plan to extend this investigation by exploring ways in which the physical

space of Articulate can intersect with words or objects and further suggest

possibilities for the nature of home.

I have asked artists and friends to describe for me their “ideal” place or dwelling as if there were no constraints that would prevent realization of that ideal in reality. I have asked for a description in any form of this “ideal”. I then take that description and make a three-dimensional sketch model, one that is not precisely dimensioned and is measured by my ‘eye’ and my interpretation of intent in the description.

My selection of people to invite has been circumstantial to a certain extent, but I have primarily asked other artists if they want to participate because the project is quite provisional. I want to use this rare opportunity and time in the project space for the kind of processes that usually occur in the studio. Often these processes are conceptually and physically messy and unformed for quite some time, even perhaps for the duration of a project such as this one.

Thus far, I have been fascinated by just how many of the people contributing have their “ideal” in their heads and can describe it to me at once with ease. I am hoping that some people might want to work over a model I make, their own or another’s, by adjustment, addition or subtraction. Still further translations and interpretations might then be possible.

As I understand it, one of the areas under investigation in the overall umbrella of this project for this group of invited artists is also to interrogate documentation in some way. (If we wish to take it on at all, and I do, even though it is always the most stressful part of making any sort of real time process based temporal work for me. I see it, more or less, as a necessary but disturbing compromise. It seems to me that documentation is always some sort of strange disembodied translation with a fair share of interpretation and sometimes misinterpretation by the documenter, myself included.

The processes involved in moving from ideation of one person to realization by another and from one form to another is very close to both the difficulties and the possible rewards of the more common forms of documentation, and I am hoping I might come to a happier relationship to the usual forms of documentation through this investigation. Basically, I am trying to turn the notion of documentation on its side in order to find a new way in.

I understand the various professional necessities of a ‘good image’ or a ‘good description’ of any work and others might find something in this project that fulfils those needs. Meanwhile, I want to explore some possibilities that certain processes themselves might have as documentation and what use value those processes might have.

I will be in the space at the following times:

11am to 5 pm on Friday 13 January and Saturday 14 January

11am -3 pm on Sunday 15 January.

For the hours and dates above everyone is most warmly welcome to come in and either work on a model or describe in some way their “ideal” or make a model from scratch or just to have a look at the process and what people have contributed.

At 3 pm on Sunday all project making and processes will stop.

The Opening with juice and drinks and some finger food will be on Sunday 15 January from 3-5 pm. You are most cordially invited to come any or all of the times above.

On unintended consequences.
'I believe you have something to tell me' is an ongoing inconclusive 'work' created collaboratively in situ, that has no imperative to progress. Any notional 'advance' toward resolution (littered with the presupposition of 'outcome') has been disallowed. The intent is to frustrate conclusiveness in deliberately taking wrong or inadvisable turns, to make an art out of 'shooting oneself in the foot' (in avoiding any actual targets). This liberty: the freedom to misdirect and aim badly risks the ricochet, and the ricochet is always telling.

The interview began by the headmaster playing an old, useful trick that he used

nine times out of ten on such occasions. He began by saying nothing at first, he

held his eyes down, while his nose wrinkled beneath his slipping glasses as if

what he was reading on the desk before him was something unfit for decent

people to see. It gave the boy time to realise where he was, to be overcome by the

awkwardness of being there, and today, for him to take in the carefully arranged

evidence which sat like stage‐props in the room. The headmaster usually held

that position for a while, judging the moment to begin speaking. After nearly

twenty seconds he looked up from the desk and removed his reading glasses; he

stared piercingly at the boy; and he played his second trick. 'I believe you have

something to tell me', he said. It rarely failed. Only the hardest cases, or the most

innocent, could resist the implication that he knew everything, and he was just

giving them a chance to confess. And the boy was no exception. 'You mean about

the rat sir?'...

An artist with a practice in performance, encompassing dance, theatre, performance art and also installations and spatial environments addressing architectural experience, Alan has put out a call for collaborators from a range of disciplines to respond and join him for one day of research and interaction at Articulate. Projects will range from text, sound, photography, dance, video, installation, performance, cooking, sewing, drawing, being on the street, and just plain talking.

They could entail planning a future project that might eventuate one day.

Where possible there will be a visiting time towards the end of each day. This may not be a viewing or showing, but rather an open door. Collaborators include : John Baylis, Peter Fraser, John Gillies, WeiZen Ho, Sahar Hosseinabadi, Mayu Kanamori, Ruark Lewis, Katia Molino, Imogen Ross, Timothy Rushton.

The project space project began last week with Lesley Giovanelli's project, Monochrome, which will open on 7 October at 6pm and be open 11-5pm until 9 October.

The project space project is a program curated by Sue Callanan and Margaret Roberts for Articulate project space. It aims to rejuvenate interest in project spaces as an exhibition practice that focuses on the thinking processes that go on in art making, and on the relationships that are formed between artworks and the places in which they are made.

It aims to do this is by inviting eight artists to each work in Articulate project space for a fortnight between now and early 2012, and to each open the space to the public on the last weekend, or at whatever stage suits what they are doing. They might work on their own or in collaboration with others. They may produce finished work or work in progress. The plan is for someone to document the process as well as what is produced at the end. This documentation may turn out to be as much an artwork as its subject.

Once the project is complete in a few months time, this documentation

will be sent to an international Art and Documentation festival to be held in Poland in April 2012. It is hoped to also be the basis of a forum or publication that discusses both project space practice and questions surrounding documentation of temporal and spatial art practices.

The eight artists who agreed to participate in the project space project are Lesley Giovanelli, Alan Schacher, Terry Hayes, Kathryn Ryan, Stephen Sullivan, Joan Grounds, Chantal Grech, and Adrian Hall, all artists who are either based in Sydney or have been until recently. The program as it stands now is provided on the right.

An Ecstasy Of Infinite Absence

This exhibition is raised from Sanaz Hosseinabadi's Ph.D dissertation 'Symbolism and belief system in applied geometry and architecture design'. It is based on research into Renaissance and Baroque Architecture and geometrical analysis.

Sanaz Hosseinabadi is a designer and theorist who is interested in the intersections between the sacredness of geometric forms and Architecture from ancient times up to the present. She is currently completing a Ph.D in Architecture at the University of NSW.

Reflections On The Monochrome

Reflections On The Monochrome by William Seeto - installed work on glass using paper and oil, as well as reconfigured imagery from 2000 to 2010. It examines developments in work with light, space and imagery; and explores practice relative to a pictorial, non-linguistic strategy of engaging with Non-Objective Abstraction. In the process of augmenting perceptual awareness, the work draws attention to its own abstracted state that is self-conscious if not reflexive with regard to the extremities of its abstraction.

STUDIOS FOR RENT

Articulate has two new studio spaces available for rent. The studios are on the first floor of an architect-designed, renovated warehouse at 497 Parramatta Road, Leichhardt, Sydney.
This is a secure warehouse with front and rear access, off-street parking, and close to public transport. There is a new timber floor, high ceiling – 3 metres at the support wall and 6 metres at the centre, plywood walls, lockable studio doors and excellent natural & ‘daylight-type’ artificial lighting.

One studio is 23 m² without natural light (studio 2), and the other is 30 m² with a skylight and window (studio 1). The cost is $5.50 per sq. metre (utilities & gst included). This is a clean, fully renovated secure warehouse close to Norton Street, Leichhardt.

There were two performances at articulate project space last night, the end of Tom Isaac's 3-day Ruach, and the beginning of Sach Catts' Yield Strength. Yield Strength will continue until Sunday 20 February - two texts waiting to be interrogated by Yield Strength are The Wealth of Nations and The Prince.
