A new sculptural installation by Lesley Giovanelli

Lesley Giovanelli Coming Going 2017  in studio clothing, fabric, dowels

In the installation at Articulate project space 14 patchwork pieces will hang through the space. In each, coloured panels of fabric divide horizontally to form a backdrop for a single item of clothing.

Partially folded, the shirts and pants hang to form vertical figure-columns  like Caryatids parading through the space. Join the Passeggiata and walk to one end and back again. Some of the clothes were mine, others donated by friends, whilst a few items are new. We like to travel - a blue Kameez from Gujarat, shockingly cut but at least large enough to fit. Linen shirts from Chico’s Arizona. Thai fisherman's pants evoking men with brown torsos and brilliant colours against the turquoise sea but actually made for tourists in Bali.

Metres of Indian shot cotton available only in a limited but luscious range of colours. Partnered with plain flat Chinese cotton every possible colour available. Lastly one piece of indigo dyed Japanese washing bag - what a pity to cut it up! All hanging like sheets and washing to form a field of fabulous colour.
