CATALOGUE

Articulate's third Decade show emphasises artworks that are time-based in incorporating literal movement into their work via moving image or moving objects. (Time-based works that are better described as 'performance' are the subject of a later Decade show.)

Some of the artists who have shown time-based work at Articulate during the last decade will show documentation of that work upstairs and in the backroom. These artists are  Ciaran Begley, Linden Braye, Bet(tin)a Bruder, Sue Callanan, Juliet Fowler Smith, Laine Hogarty, Noelene Lucas, Anne Mosey, Jacek Przybyszewski, Margaret Roberts, Margaret Seymour, Helen M Sturgess, Gary Warner, Sarah Woodward and Belinda Yee. Find their time-based works, and the many other time-based works shown at Articulate during the last 10 years, scattered among the posts seen here. The exhibition will also show a range of ways in which artists decide to document their work.

The exhibition will be supported by a catalogue of texts by the artists, as well as a 'new' time-based work by Terry Hayes on the ground floor project space.

Open 28 November - 13 December

Hours Fri-Sun 11am - 5pm

Opening event Saturday 28 November 1-5pm

Artists' Talks TBA

A5 catalogue of texts: ready for printing at OW

Articulate is celebrating a decade of exhibitions and projects with an occasional series of paired exhibitions over the next twelve months. Each pair will include a new single installation in the project space, accompanied by an exhibition documenting works from different groupings of projects that have occurred in the space over the past ten years. Read more about what Articulate celebrates here.

The first pair is Too bright for our infirm delight, a new single installation by Sarah Woodward in the ground floor project space, accompanied by Solo in the mezzanine and backroom, an exhibition that documents single installations made in the project space since 2010.

Sarah Woodward describes Too bright for our infirm delight as 'a reflection of the constant fascination with ontology, the fundamental understanding of who we are. As Heidegger states I can only see from my own point of view. That’s what I’m trying to share, my perspective.' Read more here.

Artists participating in Solo are Ciaran Begley and Merryn Hull, Elia Bosshard, Jenny Brown, Alison Clouston and Boyd, Beata Geyer, Lesley Giovanelli, Chantal Grech,  WeiZen Ho, Laine Hogarty, Wendy Howard, Richard Kean, Perrine Lacroix, Kenneth Lambert, Kathryn Ryan, Alan Schacher, Slowing Down Time (Louise Curham, Michele Elliot, Sue Healey and Jo Law),  Splinter Orchestra and Helen M Sturgess. Each document past single-installations they have shown at Articulate in the last decade, and what they say about their works and their documentation can be read here.

Dermis Final Day and Closing event tomorrow

Closing event 3-5pm Sunday 2 June
Artists' talks 2-3pm Sunday 2 June

Helen arrived on site three days before the opening with a large pile of dressmaking patterns (obtained via ‘WANTED’ postings on Freecycle), several big balls of string and rolls of waxed baking paper, lots of eyehooks and a large tub of wood glue – along with plenty of tools – and set to work. The next day she brought her beloved sewing machine, a camera and tripod and some AV equipment, and with a great deal of help from family and friends, worked on.
During the three-week run she transformed the space. She made use of points of attachment that remain from past exhibitions, and the interior architecture of this former auto workshop, to explore the palimpsest of marks and incidental ‘memorabilia’ that people – both singly and collectively – leave behind. Visitors had the opportunity to experience the different stages of the installation by coming to both the opening and the closing events, and are welcome to assist the artist if they’d like to.

Open Fri-Sun 11am - 5pm 18 May - 2 June

Artists' talks: 2pm Sunday 2 June
Closing event: 3-5pm Sunday 2 June
ROOMSHEET

Helen explores her interest in the palimpsest of marks that people leave behind them, by working with existing points of attachment remaining from previous exhibitions in the Articulate building. She also plans to explore the cocoon nature of shelter found in both clothing and the built environment. Visitors will have the opportunity to celebrate the different stages of the work by coming to both the opening and the closing events, when the results of Helen’s plan to continue to work in the space during the three weeks of the exhibition will be evident.

Dermis is part of the 'Performing Audiences' program supported by funding from the Inner West Council, a program that explores how audiences can be gently choreographed into performing for each other by their simple interactions with artworks.  It is also one of several whole-space installations that aim to strengthen relationships with the location through being the only work in a single architectural space.
