"Retinal Displacement 3 Redux" is large photographic work that is formal and abstract, uses colour and form, and incorporates abstraction on a large scale.

It re-examines work from 2016 by looking at how imagery is moderated by time and context in different locations. It reinvests the old by changing the place where it is shown - from a museum and gallery at Fairfield to a studio at Leichhardt. It offers intimacy that only comes with small spaces. The work still focuses on the ambiguity of minimal abstract images, however, it offers a different way of perceiving and interacting with it. In deconstructing imagery design parameters are broken, new ones formed, and reconfiguring alters purpose. In highlighting abstraction it draws upon past personal experience to create and enhance perception.

William Seeto is an established artist and project facilitator in photomedia, and site-specific constructed/ luminal installations that examine visual and sensory perception.

'The Offing'

Again I’m working with images taken on road trips to/and in the Australian outback. This time it’s the horizon that interests me. Surrounded and overcome by the expanse, the isolation and quietness of a never-ending landscape, it (the horizon) imposes the realisation of one’s insignificance.

At times the horizon, visually presented itself as relentless and monotonous: north, south, east and west. 360 degrees. Visually almost identical. The horizon was to be a destination. A place to aim for. However, in reality it’s a destination to be observed only and disappointingly, a destination forever beyond reach. Trying to reach this, that or any horizon is a futile endeavour. As soon as you reach your horizon a completely new horizon opens in front of you: an optimistic cruelty.

Cruel Optimism, a concept given to the phenomenon of engagement with a false but present moment: the holding up of hope and ultimately rendering a longed-for outcome, (in this case the horizon), unattainable. One is forever destined to be before the horizon.

Ideas gleened and manipulated from,

Lauren Berlant’s book ‘‘Cruel Optimism’.

My apologies,

sf

Finding myself in the beyond 3 (2020), scratch hologram, oil & ink on aluminium, 94cm x 94cm

“A historical moment: the hologram is now part of this “subliminal comfort” that is our destiny, of this happiness now consecrated to the mental simulacrum and to the environmental fable of special effects” (Baudrillard, 1994, 107).

My practice explores the concept of blended reality, which underpins our contemporary experience. It shows how we have influenced our perception of space and place through geospatial technologies such as Google Earth.

On a daily basis, I record the spaces I walk through by using mobile and computerised technology, creating aerial views using line drawings and painting on aluminium for the physical or ‘real’ representation. Hand-drawn scratch holograms are then superimposed to represent ‘virtual’ reality. References to digital experience are juxtaposed with analogue methods, thus establishing my interpretation of blended reality. As well as this, the artworks are spatially intriguing, the ‘conjunction’ creates two different features of the surroundings (that is, the schematic architectural drawing of Victorian architecture style and the painting of contemporary architectural style) prompting the intended perceptual effect. Through this process, I hope to create a feeling of emotional and rational affectivity to describe space.

A New Direction: An Update | Articulate in transition

Articulate in transition - an update

In July this year Articulate announced that its current board would step down at the end of the year and called for an open meeting to see if there were a new group or individuals who were interested to take over the space to either to continue Articulate’s mission, or to set up a new art related project.

This met with a very positive response and over several meetings a group emerged who were interested in continuing Articulate’s mission. The group have been meeting regularly and are gradually taking on various roles with the support of the current board, who continue to be active members. The plan is that a new board will establish itself and take over full responsibility for the running of the space from mid February 2022. The current board is providing guidance until Easter 2022.

The new group includes,
Belinda Yee, Dell Walker, Jack Poppert, Jennifer Chua, John Tonkin, Kate McGuinness, Sarah Woodward, and WeiZen Ho

The shows that were due to take place during the lockdown period are being rescheduled and will continue into next year. These shows are predominantly in the first part of the year. Articulate will do a callout for proposals when the current program, and new board has settled into place. Articulate continues to be open to receiving proposals -the next closing date will be advertised on the home page.

Articulate will reopen its doors to the public from the 11th October, in line with NSW government Covid-safe regulations. There will be an opportunity for a final showing of the project space project Decade show, psp.doc, which had a brief exposure in June and remained in situ following the sudden lockdown. Further details of this, and the coming shows of Steven Fasan (Back Room) and Eunjoo Jang (Articulate Upstairs), will be advertised shortly.

We look forward to opening our doors and seeing you all again very soon.
