Coming - Elke Wohlfahrt: SERIOUSLY VAGUE - Positively Negative

Articulate Backroom

Open: Friday – Sunday 11am – 5pm 18 April -03 May 2021

Opening event: Saturday 17 April , 1-5pm

My work is material-driven and for this exhibition I am re-purposing hardware components of analogue photography. Of course, the original use of the material was to produce positives to restore and enhance memories. Experimenting and playing with hundreds of film negatives, I realised at some stage that there was a formal connection between the film negatives and the fact that in Covid 19 times being ‘negative’ is something very ‘positive’.

During the pandemic we have been standing our ground, accepting and modifying our behaviour to adjust to the impact of the cultural changes forced upon us by restrictions, necessary to control the spread of the virus. The ‘Negative banners” can be interpreted as a metaphor for man muss auch mal Flagge zeigen or ‘holding your ground’.
