FERAL is a progressive, overlapping exhibition that will be open Friday - Sunday 11-5pm between 9 January - 8 February 2015. Opening events for its five iterations are Fridays 9, 16, 23 + 30 January and 6 February at 6-8pm, each of which will show the work of a different combination of twenty artists.

The FERAL program is designed for artists to
experiment with installation or placement of artwork in an architectural space
that is already altered by the earlier installation of other artists' work, and
which will be altered again when another group replaces that earlier
installation. It is called FERAL because its progressive overlapping nature is a slightly
feral form of exhibition practice, and because FERAL sounds like FAIR
ISLE, the 2014 version of the
same sort of project. The FERAL/FAIR-ISLE
project is part of the broader Articulate interest in the
relationships artworks form with their locations. It does this by focusing in particular on the contribution that the changing installation of artworks make in the constitution of a site.

Artist Statement 2014
Over two decades ago I started to photograph public pools I swam laps in.
Twenty-four transparencies of pool start blocks from that archive have been applied to acrylic to construct a life-size replica of a start block. This solar powered sculpture Starting Over Again is internally illuminated thereby creating the effect of a light box. Under the weight of safety regulatory bodies, start blocks have been diminishing from many public swimming pools. However, with each “bright idea” that has surfaced about how to enhance the performance of elite swimmers, start blocks have also been evolving. Creative energy has sustained the life span of the start block. The way we source energy, both internally and externally, determines whether it is a force that sustains or depletes.
Positioned to overlook the ocean Starting Over Again invites the viewer
to contemplate diving into water that has no clear direction. |
